Aroma chemicals are used to compound both flavor compositions (for imparting attractive taste and aroma to processed foods and beverages) and fragrance formulations (which impart a pleasing scent to consumer goods such as perfumes, toiletries, cosmetics, detergents and household cleaners). Compounded flavors and fragrances are complex blends that include in their formulations not only aroma chemicals but also essential oils and natural extracts, solvents, diluents and carriers.
In 2000, the worldwide flavor and fragrance business, including sales of compounded flavor and fragrance compositions and essential oils, was valued at almost $14 billion, representing a 4.0% compounded yearly growth rate since 1997. Production of aroma chemicals, calculated from estimates of supply/demand by major geographic region, accounted for $1.8 billion of the total value
Although overcapacity is known to exist for some products, the estimated production of aroma chemicals appears to be only in slight excess of consumption. Current demand for aroma chemicals is estimated to be approximately in balance with the supply.
While production of aroma chemicals is virtually impossible to assess precisely because of the large number of chemicals involved in a highly complex web of international trading, consumption is estimated to vary significantly worldwide, by geographic area as well as by product category. In 2000, the United States and Western Europe together accounted for over 70% of the value of all aroma chemicals and over 90% of the value of musk chemicals consumed in flavor and fragrance compositions. These high ratios also characterize the estimated consumption of aroma chemicals for 2000.

Application of mehandi/henna as a temporary form of skin decoration in the Indian Subcontinent, as well as by expatriate communities from these areas. Mehndi decorations became fashionable in the West in the late 1990s, where they are sometimes called henna tattoos. Henna is typically applied during special occasions like weddings and festivals like Diwali, Bhaidooj, Teej and Eid. In some Hindu festivals, every woman tries to have Henna done on her hands and feet. It is usually drawn on the palms and feet, where the color will be darkest because the skin contains higher levels of keratin which binds temporarily to lawsone, the colorant of henna. Henna was originally used as a form of decoration mainly for brides.
In the modern age, usually people buy readymade Henna cones, which are ready to use and make painting easy. However, in rural areas in India, women grind fresh henna leaves on sil (grinding stone) with added oil, which though not as refined as professionally prepared henna cones, brings much darker colors.
Mehndi is a ceremonial art form which originated in ancient India. Intricate patterns of mehndi are typically applied to brides before wedding ceremonies. The bridegroom is also painted in some parts of India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sudan. In Rajasthan (north-west India), the grooms are given designs that are often as elaborate as those for brides. In Assam, apart from marriage, it is broadly used by unmarried women during Rongali bihu (there are no restrictions to the married ones). Henna is also common in some gulf states, specially Bahrain, where the night before the wedding night is dedicated to decorating the bride with henna, and called "Henna night".

Natural products have played a significant role in human disease therapy and prevention (1). More than 60% and 75% of the chemotherapeutic drugs for cancer and infectious disease, respectively, are of natural origin (2). With more than 23,000 known compounds, terpenoids, also referred to as terpenes, are the largest class of natural products. Among this group, many interesting compounds are extensively applied in the industrial sector as flavors, fragrances, and spices, and are also used in perfumery and cosmetics products and food additives (1,3,4). Many terpenes have biological activities and are used for medical purposes. For example, the antimalarial drug Artemisinin and the anticancer drug paclitaxel (Taxol®) are two of a few terpenes with established medical applications. Natural products continue to be one of the most important sources of lead compounds for the pharmaceutical industry. At the same time, more terpenes have been discovered as efficacious compounds in human disease therapy and prevention. In particular, marine chemists and biologists have identified many marine terpenes with promising potential for medical applications.
